Two limited edition Fellowship of the Ring Definitive First Day Covers (FDCs) were issued to coincide with the worldwide release of Peter Jackson’s ‘The Lord of The Rings: The Fellowship of The Ring’ motion picture. These magnificent Fellowship of the Ring FDC envelopes which are much in demand by collectors, pay tribute to ‘The Lord of The Rings’ trilogy and explore J.R.R. Tolkien’s classic Middle-Earth saga in a manner that movie enthusiasts, stamp lovers, and fans will enjoy and appreciate.
TWO PICTURESQUE OFFICIAL Fellowship of the Ring First Day Covers postmarked Dec. 4, 2001: one envelope features The Fellowship on march design affixed with a set of Self Adhesives, the other design Ringwraith with Gummed stamps showing pivotal characters from the award winning The Lord of The Rings: The Fellowship of The Ring movie. Each envelope features a different motif and was initially available individually or in a set - both items sold out quickly. See below for additional information about FDCs. Envelope sizes - gummed: 4.72 H x 8.07 W inches; 120 x 205 mm, self-adhesive: 4.53 H x 8.07 W inches; 115 x 205 mm. Issue date: 4 December 2001 (12/4/01).

NEW ZEALAND POST'S 2001 ‘The Fellowship of The Ring’ philatelic issue is the only stamp release officially licensed by New Line Cinema and approved by the film’s director, Peter Jackson, and was released with their total cooperation and blessing. Designed by Sacha Lees at Weta Workshop - the same team nominated for three Academy Awards and winner of two prestigious BAFTA Awards - now out of print (OOP), these limited edition Fellowship of the Ring First Day Covers represent a wonderful opportunity to commemorate this huge cinematic undertaking. A second OOP ‘The Two Towers’ set was issued in December 2002 and a third ‘The Return of the King’ set was released in November 2003 to commemorate ‘The Lord of the Rings’ movie trilogy.

Envelope depicts The Fellowship on the march in silhouette affixed with complete 2001 set of self-adhesive Fellowship of the Ring stamps postmarked on the first day of ‘The Fellowship of the Ring’ stamp issue. Designed for postal vending machines, self-adhesives are smaller (26 x 37 mm; 1 x 1 1/2") than the corresponding gummed stamps (25 x 50 mm; 1 x 2"), and in a more natural portrait frame versus the landscape framing of the gummed stamps.

Envelope featuring a Ringwraith, one of the servants of Sauron, affixed with set of six gummed Fellowship of the Ring stamps postmarked on the first day of issue. This gummed FDC is also included in the deluxe Presentation Pack set.
First Day Covers: Pictorial envelopes which are issued and stamped with a specifically-designed cancellation Fellowship of the Ring postmark that is only used for that day and issue. The cancellation stamp for these Fellowship of the Ring First Day Covers is a stylized Eye of Sauron encircled by the words ‘The Fellowship of The Ring, First Day of Issue, 4 December 2001, Stamps Centre Wanganui New Zealand’. First Day Covers are very collectable since they are rare and hard to obtain after issuance. This issue was only released in New Zealand and sold out quickly. Approximately 16,000 Fellowship First Day Covers were issued by NZ Post.
